For fucks sake, doesn't every police department in towns slightly larger than an unincorporated town have some sort of APC? I remember my home county having one at least 10-15 years ago. In the event of a shoot out, I would want to have my officers protected, and that's what these are for. They aren't tanks, they have no weapons.

Sure they've used them, except one weights 16K and the MRAP weights 32K. One can withstand roadside bombs typically wired to artillery shells and the other is good against small arms fire. I'm flattered that the boys in blue want to play with our toys. Carry on I guess, whatever makes you sleep better at night. Army can't be deployed domestically (Posse Comitatus), just National Guard or local militias. Whether that's actually any obstacle for the omnipotent government crowd is another story...

What do you mean "omnipotent government crowd"?

Also did not know the US army cannot be deployed domestically our army can and has been.

The latest time it was deployed as an army domestically (ie not disaster relief) was when martial law was declared in 1970 here in Canada.

My county SWAT team, well, I don't live there anymore, but my home county, just took delivery of an MRAP

Problem is, it isn't titled yet, so they couldn't even use it in the hostage situation they just had a few weeks ago. They do have an older armored car though, which I think is going to be replaced once the new one is on the road.

Some crazy guy barricaded himself in his apartment and was threatening to set the building on fire. He shot up the first two police cars that responded and SWAT had to use the armored truck to evacuate the officers that were pinned down.

The MRAP has lot of features (blast-proof hull, etc) that police don't need, but police do need to have at least some armored vehicles for situations like that. A new armored truck built specifically for police use is several hundred thousand dollars, while a used MRAP is free and can do all the same things the purpose-built ones can, so you can see how it becomes an easy decision for law enforcement agencies to make, even if the vehicle looks too "scary".

A large number of people view local rule, our Constitutional protections, and pretty much any limitations on government as an obstacle to things they'd like to mandate at a national level. We've lost a lot of checks on centralized power.

Exactly what jaguar7117 said. No branch of the military can be used against citizens of the USA. The military can be called up for National Disaster response to help with whatever needs to be done though. One of the things that as always annoyed me about the "The Army will kill us all," types is the thought process that leads them to think Soldiers are robots who would indiscriminately kill Americans because they are ordered to. I do not know a single Soldier would just run around killing Americans because they were ordered to. Any order that is illegal or immoral does not have to be followed and I would hope all Service Members are smart enough to distinguish that an order to kill Americans is just that.

The Posse Comitatus Act is the United States federal law ( 18 U.S.C. § 1385 , original at 20 Stat. 152 ) that was passed on June 18, 1878, after the end of Reconstruction and was updated in 1981. Its intent (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807 ) was to limit the powers of Federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce the state laws .

The Act, as modified in 1981, refers to the Armed Forces of the United States . It does not apply to the National Guard under state authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within its home state or in an adjacent state if invited by that state's governor. The United States Coast Guard , which operates under the Department of Homeland Security , is also not covered by the Posse Comitatus Act, primarily because although the Coast Guard is an armed service, it also has both a maritime law enforcement mission and a federal regulatory agency mission. ( Wikipedia )

"Omnipotent government crowd" meaning that the government is all-powerful and can do as it pleases, regardless of the laws or Constitution. I don't think it's quite that bad yet, but it's not quite as it should be. Since 9/11, governmental power in the name of national security has been getting more and more invasive.

It's a Caiman they will flip it. If the police ever get to worked up and try to kill everyone with it just aim for the hood it's not armored once you take out the engine it's a really nice paper weight.

Or just drive straight at it if they swerve it will flip, if it runs over your car it will flip. If you look at it for too long it will flip, basically it will flip. Once it is done flipping it will flip again.

Or if you are the smart ass type just put locks on the door handles. They will have to cut the locks off, that should at least slow them down.

Actually send me a money order for $200 and I will tell you how to steal it.

They don't use it for drunk riots after football games. They have a little SWAT van for that. They use it for things like major drug busts and gang violence (we have a disproportionally high gang rate).

It was only declared in Quebec. It was declared because of the campaign of bombing that the Front de Liberation Du Quebec (FLQ) had been carrying out since 1963 morphed into a campaign of kidnapping government officials. In 1969 for example the bombing of the Montreal Stock Exchange injured 27 people, although most of the 95 bombs placed over those 7 years were just mailbox pipe bombs.

In October 1970 the FLQ kidnapped the British Trade Commissioner. They then kidnapped a Minister from the government of Quebec a few days later.

In response to this the Quebec government requested the army aid it in carrying out it's civil duties and thus the "war measures act" was brought into play and remained until Jan 5 1971. During this time the Minister from Quebec was executed by his kidnappers. His kidnappers were eventually caught.

The other kidnappers who had James Cross negotiated that in exchange for James Cross the trade commissioner, they be given safe passage to Cuba although some (apparently) eventually returned to Canada and faced reduced sentences.

The Navy has the littoral combat ship=turd, Air Force has the F35=turd, Army has the never ending "what uniform makes me look the sexiest trials"=turd, Marines= In an abusive relationship with the Navy's bad decisions/turd. DOD equipment other than web gear should make the LEO run to the hills with fear.

It's honestly all very depressing. I'm all for small government. A dollar is much more beneficial in the hands of the public. And the structure for military spending is just bat shit insane. Let's spend money we don't need to so we can get the same amount next year. Also, I live in Baltimore and there are about 20-30 cruisers that were never used, yet were fully stocked, then extended 20ft @ $1mil a foot to accommodate some dingy application that was never actually implemented. Yah, a cool couple billion sitting in the harbor rusting away for no good reason. And this example is nothing in comparison to the big picture. And I have no idea why everyone has a hard on for the F-35. Yet the F-22 is far superior with far less orders. Not that I'm implying we need thousands of fighters in todays society.

Kinja'd!!! STAGGERED-6 > Chuck 2(O=[][]=O)2
08/22/2014 at 00:05

Kinja'd!!!1

The boys on the hill got it all figured out, that's why the cruisers are sitting and the f35 will have an astronomical unit cost when it's all said and done. The f22 is all fine and good now that it's not lawn darting it's pilots into the side of Alaskan mountains, or maybe it's still killin'em idk. Perfect example, army wants a new service trifle for years now but our marksman deploy with enhanced m14s with chassis made by Troy and Ellis, a rifle with roots back to ww2 Korea and Nam. I'm intimately familiar with DOD waste but I'd really hate to see the attitude trickle down to law enforcement. My buddy is LEO in Phx but if I catch him acting like anything he's not (military) I'll provide a free wall to wall counseling session. Rich guys waste money man, it's what they do.
